With the arrival of the summer, gardeners are certainly looking forward to spending their free time surrounded by greenery, warmed by the sun’s rays and invigorated by the fresh air.
But after many seasons spent with the same furniture, it might be time to rethink your outdoor furniture and, if you’re a do-it-yourselfer, take the opportunity to use your skills and creativity to create a unique style full of character for your garden.
Here are some ideas for DIY wooden garden furniture.
In recent years there has been a growing trend towards reusing and repurposing wooden artefacts that were created to perform other functions, such as pallets and wooden fruit crates. This approach stands out for its strong environmental sustainability, but also for the ingenuity required in repurposing.
For example, a wooden pallet simply lying on the ground can be used as a seat; with more effort a second pallet can be mounted vertically or diagonally to make the back of a chair or deckchair. A large pallet can be used as a coffee table, while stacking them together makes counters; fruit crates can become vases for flowers or tables and chairs can be assembled together… In short, you can completely redo your garden furniture with recycled wood materials, adding cushions and padding where necessary for greater comfort.
In this way the result is industrial or shabby chic furniture, depending on whether you want to emphasise the raw and material aspects of the wood or its “unkemptness” resulting from repurposing.
In both cases it is important to treat the wood properly with outdoor paint, both to protect it from atmospheric agents and parasites to improve the durability of the new furniture, and to decorate it with colours and finishes that complete the rebirth of these recovered materials.
In this case, the choice of outdoor paint colour is very much a matter of personal taste: you can enhance the energy and vitality of the exterior with bright, warm colours, focus on comfort and relaxation with pastel shades or create contrast with cooler hues; there is also nothing to stop you from choosing several colours from the same group!
If, on the other hand, you decide to buy garden furniture already made, there is nothing to stop you from intervening with outdoor paint to give it a personal touch and adapt it better to your tastes!
The same can be said for the renovation of garden furniture that you already own with impregnation and wood oils: in this case the repainting and finishing operations must be preceded by the sanding of the old layers of paint and the use of impregnation and oils to nourish and protect the wood.
